Photography genres you can pursue to become a professional photographer

One question that crosses every aspirational photographer’s mind is what genre to pursue actively. There are so many types of photography that are so unique and distinct from each other that one is spoilt for choice and often conflicted.

Attending a photography training or taking up an accredited photography course can give a budding photographer perspective as it sheds light on what each aspect of photography encompasses.

The various photography genres one can pursue professionally are:

Portrait Photography

This is the most popular type of photography and most photographers start their careers from here and use it to build a portfolio. All the shoots you see – pre-wedding, maternity shoots, new born shoots, corporate pictures, model portfolios fall under this category. This type of photography is required by almost every customer multiple times in their life.

Fashion Photography

This sort of photography is very glamorous and more difficult to get into as compared to the other photography avenues. From covering high-end fashion shoots for Vogue to capturing the latest runway styles to being a part of exotic fashion hubs such as Milan, Paris and New York, this type of photography is quite coveted. It is an amalgamation of documentary photography, one-on-one work etc. If you are shooting for a magazine or catalogue then the location changes depending on the story the pictures need to tell – it can range from a beach to a forest to a mountain top to an elementary school. Direction is key, lighting is super important and the look of the model is everything.

Wildlife photography

This type of photography requires perseverance and the flair – one needs to be acquainted with the entire ecosystem. What is the climate like? What time does the animal come out to drink water? What does the mating call sound like? Etc. Studying the subject is as important as knowing the technique. If instant gratification is your thing, this type of photography is not for you. Wildlife photographers wait hours, weeks and months to get the perfect shot – but when they do, it leaves everyone awestruck.

Wedding Photography

This type of photography is never likely to go out of business – everyone dreams of an ideal wedding and when they have it, they bring on a photographer to capture these precious moments. However, this type of photography can be gratifying and tedious at the same time – you are dealing with people who are not professional models but you still need to bring out that perfect shot. This includes both portrait as well as event photography and one needs to get it right almost in the first go. These pictures hold a sentimental value and evoke nostalgia when revisited so as a photographer you need to keep an eye out for the candid and special moments.

Event Photography

This type of photography encompasses everything from corporate events to musical concerts. It involves both photojournalistic documentary as well as portrait photography. These can be used for publicity &as well as keep sakes& souvenirs.
